Creating Rewards in Heima
Rewards are a fun way to motivate your household members. When someone completes enough chores and earns enough points, they can unlock and claim a reward — like a treat, a privilege, or something you define yourself.
This guide walks you through every option in the Reward Editor so you can create rewards that feel fair, motivating, and personal to your space.
Live Preview
At the top of the editor you'll find a live preview card that updates as you type. It shows exactly how the reward will look to members once it's published. Use it to make sure the name, icon, and settings all look right before saving.
Basics
Icon
Tap the icon tile to open the icon picker. You can choose from a curated set of icons or pick an emoji. The icon is optional — if you leave it empty, a default gift icon is used.
To remove a selected icon, tap the × button next to it.
Name (required)
Give the reward a clear, recognizable name. Members will see this name when browsing available rewards. Examples:
- "Movie Night Pick"
- "Skip One Chore"
- "Ice Cream Trip"
Description (optional)
Use the description to add extra context or instructions. For example:
"You get to pick the movie and snacks for family movie night."
Reward Type
Choose the category that best fits your reward. This helps members understand what kind of reward they're working towards.
| Type | What it means |
|---|---|
| Manual | A reward that requires a parent or admin to do something — like handing over a treat or granting permission. |
| Privilege | Access to something special, like extra screen time or staying up late. |
| Treat | Something tasty or fun, like a dessert or a small gift. |
| Custom | Anything that doesn't fit the other categories — fully up to you to define. |
Unlock Rules
Unlock rules define what a member needs to achieve before they can claim this reward.
Required Chores
Set the minimum number of chores a member must complete to unlock this reward. Defaults to 1. Tap + or − to adjust.
Tip: For big rewards, set a higher chore count to make earning it feel special.
Required XP
Set the minimum amount of experience points (XP) a member needs. Adjusted in steps of 10. Set to 0 to skip this requirement entirely.
XP is earned by completing chores — higher-effort chores give more XP.
Minimum Chore Effort
Use the slider to set the lowest effort level a chore must have to count towards this reward. Effort goes from Any (0) to 10.
- Any — All completed chores count, regardless of how hard they are.
- 5 — Only chores with an effort level of 5 or higher count.
- 10 — Only the hardest chores count.
This is useful if you want to reward members specifically for tackling difficult tasks.
Claim Behavior
These settings control what happens when a member claims the reward.
Repeatable
Toggle this on if members should be able to claim this reward more than once. Leave it off for one-time rewards.
Examples:
- One-time: "Special Birthday Reward"
- Repeatable: "Friday Movie Pick"
Cooldown Days (only for repeatable rewards)
If the reward is repeatable, you can set a cooldown period — the number of days a member must wait before claiming it again. Set to 0 for no cooldown.
Example: A cooldown of 7 days means a member can earn this reward once a week at most.
Active
Toggle this to control whether the reward is currently available to members. You can turn a reward off temporarily without deleting it — useful for seasonal or special-occasion rewards.
Saving the Reward
Tap Add (or Update if you're editing an existing reward) in the top-right corner. The name field is required — everything else is optional or has a sensible default.
If something is missing or incorrect, a validation message will appear to guide you.
Quick Tips
- Start with a small chore count and adjust based on how quickly members earn rewards.
- Use Required XP in combination with Required Chores for rewards that should only be unlocked by consistent, quality effort.
- Use Minimum Chore Effort to encourage members to take on tougher chores.
- Use cooldowns to keep repeatable rewards from being claimed too frequently.
- Deactivate a reward instead of deleting it — you can always turn it back on later.
